Consider the details
Limestone selection starts with the particular stone.

Choose an exterior paving variety
Limestone is a natural-stone family, not one uniform product. The Natural Stone Institute notes that a successful exterior cladding history does not make every limestone suitable for exterior paving. Ask for the actual variety, supplier, thickness and proposed use. A wall tile, interior floor tile and outdoor paver may share a color name while requiring different applications and installation details.
Compare finish and representative variation
Review more than one unit to understand the range of tone, mineral markings and surface texture. A refined limestone finish can sit well beside warm architecture, but aesthetics do not settle wet-use suitability. Compare the surface and edges under the conditions expected at the patio or pool. Ask how the accepted sample range relates to the delivered selection.
Check support and loading
The stone dimensions and intended application should guide the installation assembly. Larger slabs and vehicle-bearing areas may require different support than pedestrian paving. Do not transfer a concrete-paver detail to limestone without confirmation. Review thresholds, drainage, border restraint and any coping pieces together, and establish the finished heights before ordering.
Use non-acidic care guidance
Limestone and travertine are calcium-carbonate-based stones that can be altered by mild acids. Vinegar, lemon-based cleaners and generic acid washes are not safe default methods. Follow the supplier's material-specific maintenance guidance and test treatments. If an impregnator is recommended, understand its effect on appearance and stain resistance; it does not make the stone stain-proof or prevent every etch.
Compare limestone with related options
Travertine has its own characteristic formation and voids, while stone-look porcelain is a manufactured ceramic product. Compare the actual units, installation and care rather than selecting only from a photograph. Confirm current supply and installation support before placing a particular limestone selection in the project estimate.

Before the project begins.
Is limestone the same as travertine?
Travertine is a type of limestone, but selections can have different surface characteristics and properties. Compare the specific supplied products rather than treating the names as interchangeable.
Can limestone be used around a pool?
Some exterior selections may be suitable. Confirm the actual stone, finish, support, edge details and wet-use guidance with the supplier and installer.
Can limestone be cleaned with vinegar?
No, not as a default stone-care method. Limestone is acid-sensitive. Use the supplier or Natural Stone Institute guidance for appropriate non-acidic cleaning.
