Consider the details

Review the tested play-surface system, not just turf.

Play areas need a surface system designed for the actual equipment and use.

Safety is a system requirement

Turf alone does not establish fall protection. Shock-pad design, drainage, equipment fall height, tested impact performance and maintenance need specialist assessment. Ask for applicable system documentation.

Start with the equipment and users

Playground surfacing should be chosen for the actual equipment, intended ages and fall conditions. Decorative turf does not establish impact protection. Ask for applicable documentation for the complete installed assembly, including any shock pad, base and infill. A claim about one component is not proof that the proposed finished surface meets the relevant requirements.

Coordinate access and drainage

The play layout needs clear movement between activities, appropriate transitions to paving and maintained drainage. Seams, edges and changes in level deserve attention because children may use the space differently from an adult walking through it. Equipment foundations and the surrounding surface should be planned together, with specialist responsibilities identified in the scope.

Document inspection and care

A play surface needs a maintenance and inspection plan for its actual use. Debris, damaged seams, displaced infill or changes to the equipment can affect performance. Heat exposure and shade should be considered before choosing where the play area belongs. Do not treat a residential turf installation as automatic evidence of playground-surface competence or certification.

Questions worth asking

Before the project begins.

Does artificial turf alone provide fall protection?

No. Relevant performance concerns the complete tested surface assembly and the actual equipment fall conditions, not simply the green finish.

Can an ordinary lawn installation quote cover playground equipment?

Not automatically. Equipment, impact protection, foundations and any applicable requirements need a separate, clearly qualified scope.
