Consider the details

Resolve stair geometry before selecting the surface.

Connect changes in level with transitions that feel natural and deliberate.

Start with the elevation change

Rise, tread, landing space and adjoining grades need to work together. A decorative finish cannot correct an unsafe stair layout.

Begin with the level change

Measure the elevations that the steps must connect and identify how people approach them. Consistent risers, usable treads, landings and any required handrails or guards are design decisions, not decorative details. Review applicable requirements with the appropriate designer or authority. Pavers applied to an unsuitable stair arrangement do not make the route safe or compliant.

Specify support and exposed edges

A paved tread needs stable support, appropriate bonding or restraint and a deliberate edge profile. Loose caps, an unsupported overhang or a slippery finish can undermine an otherwise attractive result. The selected unit should be intended for the proposed use. Ask how water is managed at the top and bottom and how the finished step meets the adjoining walkway or patio.

Distinguish resurfacing from rebuilding

Covering an existing step can change its height relative to the next riser or a doorway. A veneer is not automatically an acceptable repair for a failed structure. Explain whether the work retains existing supports or rebuilds them and who handles specialist design where required. Confirm the final geometry before ordering finish units or matching the adjacent pattern.

Questions worth asking

Before the project begins.

Can new pavers be placed over existing steps?

Only after assessing the structure, finished dimensions, support and selected system. Added thickness can alter riser consistency and doorway clearance.

Are paver steps the same work as a flat patio?

No. Steps introduce level changes, exposed edges and potentially handrail, guard and structural requirements. Their design and support need separate review.
